The Junior Entrepreneur Programme (JEP) is a 12- 16 week entrepreneurial education programme for primary school children. Developed in Ireland, this innovative programme opens the minds of pupils to the joy of entrepreneurship while developing a number of skills including literacy, writing, presentation, drawing, technology, research skills, numeracy, financial, consumer awareness, storytelling, listening skills, creative thinking, problem solving, team building and collaboration skills.
During the programme the children taking part propose a number of ideas, with one of these being chosen as a class business.
The programme also has a significant impact on building confidence, self- awareness and self – esteem, and an appreciation of individual skills and talents of each child.
In the past few years there have been some very interesting JEP projects here in Faha NS. The school was also honoured to be invited to the very first ( and second ) Junior Entrepreneur Showcase Days in the RDS, to showcase their projects.
In 2018 the children made a fun- filled recipe book – made by kids for kids. From smoothies to sandwiches they designed, made and photographed all their own recipes which were then printed in book form and titled DIY Healthy Lifestyle.
In 2019 the children’s idea was the “ Welllbeing Water Bottle” – an aluminium sports bottle, with a positive wellbeing message on it. As water is so healthy and we are trying to move away from the use of plastics, we felt that our bottle would be different as it promoted a message of wellbeing every time we drank from it.
Although the ultimate aim of JEP is for the company to make a profit, last year the class decided that they would also like to give something back to the community. As the Wellbeing Water Bottles promoted mental health, they chose a local organisation Jigsaw – the National Centre for Youth Mental Health as the organisation, an organisation that tries to ensure that no young person feels alone, isolated and disconnected from others around them and provides vital support to young people with their mental health by working closely with communities across Ireland. They are based in Tralee. They help with young adults aged 12 – 25. They decided to donate a percentage of their profits to this worth - while organisation.
The present 6th class are currently in top secret meetings to discuss their JEP project for this year. Watch this space…….!!!
